Natural limit to the γ/hadron separation for a stand alone air Cherenkov telescope
نویسنده
چکیده
The γ/hadron separation in the imaging air Cherenkov telescope technique is based on differences between images of a hadronic shower and a γ induced electromagnetic cascade. One may expect for a large telescope that a detection of hadronic events which contains Cherenkov light from one γ subcascade only is possible. In fact, simulations shows that for the MAGIC telescope their fraction in total protonic background is in order of 3.5% to 1% depending on the trigger threshold. It was found out that such images have small sizes (mainly below 400 ph.e.) what corresponds to the sizes of the low energy primary γ’s (below 100 GeV). It is shown that parameters describing a shape of images from one subcascade have similar distributions like a primary γ events, so those parameters are not efficient in all methods of γ selection. Similar studies based on MC simulations are presented also for the images from 2 γ subcascade which are products of the same π decay.

متن کاملAn investigation of using hump in the Cherenkov photon lateral distribution for Gamma-Hadron separation
Simulation of gamma and hadron showers in the energy range 100GeV- 25TeV has been carried out. For a big ideal Cherenkov light array, characteristics of lateral distribution of Cherenkov photon density have been studied. Results from this ideal detector are compared with those simulated for a real TUNKA- like array to investigate experimental potential of using existence of a hump in lateral di...
متن کامل30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Monte Carlo studies of the VERITAS array of Cherenkov telescopes
VERITAS is a system of four imaging Cherenkov telescopes located at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in southern Arizona. We present here results of detailed Monte Carlo simulations of the array response to extensive air showers. Cherenkov image and shower parameter distributions are calculated and show good agreement with distributions obtained from observations of background cosmic rays ...
متن کاملMonte Carlo Studies of Geomagnetic Field Effects on the Imaging Air Cherenkov Technique for the MAGIC Telescope Site
Imaging air Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) like MAGIC detect the Cherenkov light from extensive air showers (EAS) initiated by very high energy (VHE) γ-rays impinging on the Earth’s atmosphere. Due to the overwhelming background from hadron induced EAS, the discrimination of the rare γ-like events is vital. The influence of the geomagnetic field (GF) on the development of EAS can further complica...
